Merlin Association for Promotion of Creativity

Samanj u DbigraduThe first full day International Fair in Moncastello took place last Saturday (28 May 2016) in Dvigrad, several centuries after walls collapsed, as an announcement of sorts for a number of these fairs throughout the tourist season.

Associations from Pula, Rijeka and Slovenian Ribnica participated in this fair, and presented the medieval way of life while reviving the old crafts.

The fair was visited by the Mayor of Kanfanar who supported the initiative of the organizers, recognizing the potential of this event. Historical replicas of medieval tents were erected at the foot of the castle walls, where visitors had the opportunity to see and try out the old crafts such as weaving on the loom frames, archery, fencing and cooking on the open fire. Tavern Moncastell served the dishes made from wild plants and mushrooms and grains that were the basis of the medieval diet of poor people. Visitors could taste a variety of delicacies that our ancestors made, such as the gingerbread cookies, gingerbread and spiced wine Hippocras. This food delighted everyone.

Merlin Association from Pula presented hand-made souvenirs on the theme of Dvigrad and the coat of arms of the city of St. Sophia. Children and visitors were welcomed to the fair with the Viva kompa narrators from Pula amd their music of the lutes and percussion. Order of St. Vid from Rijeka and Order Viridi Hedera from Slovenian Ribnica showed the life and struggles of the Middle Ages, and the traditional chivalric values. Association from Rijeka presented the life in the second half of the 15th century in Rijeka, Kastav and the surrounding area. The association was established as a chivarlic order with the Grand Master, knights, squires, craftsmen and ladies. Members of the association nurture the medieval skills of archery and fencing, dancing, playing, tools making. The motto of this association is the Latin phrase "Igni Ferroque" which in Croatian means "fire and sword". The knights form the association played with children, and showed the remarkable skills in handling weapons, which were presented to the audience. The Association of Collectors of Rovinj presented an interesting collection of antiques and everyday objects from the past centuries.

If you could not participate in this medieval spectacle, you can certainly do it on jakovljevo, when the festivals will take place in Kanfanar and the medieval Dvigrad.
